Brilliant Brunellos from Angelo Gaja

Expanding beyond his Piedmont stronghold, Angelo Gaja acquired the Pieve Santa Restituta estate in 1994. His vision saw through the troubled and poor terrain with its chalky, rocky soils; as he used his dynamic touch to resituate long dormant vines and create two epic vineyards: Rennina and Sugarille. Eventually, a 4,000 square meter cellar was constructed underground below existing structures to impact the environment as little as possible.

‘If you build it, they will come!’ The debut of this magnificent cellar in 2004 allowed Gaja to craft a blended vineyard Brunello for the first time, giving him the space to use an even stricter selection process for the single vineyard wines. Rennina and Sugarille are better than they ever were and are definitely among the top Brunellos made in this excellent vintage!

“Bright dark red with ruby tones. Black fruits, licorice, incense and minerals on the nose; smells like a head shop. Utterly silky and perfumed on entry, then tightly coiled in the middle, with a deep sweetness leavened by a saline quality. This very young Brunello boasts a terrific tannic structure and saturates the entire palate.
